When Jensyn first reached out to me about a photo session with her three fur-babies, I knew this was going to be something truly special. She wanted to celebrate her birthday in a unique way by creating an old-school, 90s-style family portrait with her pets—all dressed in matching denim outfits. I was immediately on board with her creative vision, and her beautiful home in Coeur d’Alene turned out to be the perfect backdrop for this nostalgic and heartwarming session.
Meet the Stars of the Session
First up, there’s Nellie, a two-year-old black Labrador who’s absolutely obsessed with her ball and, of course, treats. Her playful energy and love for fetch made her a natural in front of the camera. Then there’s Poppie, a nine-month-old German Shepherd/Cattle Dog/Husky mix who came into Jensyn’s life courtesy of Bark, A Rescue Pub. Poppie’s mischievous nature and obsession with chewing and treats kept us all laughing throughout the session. Finally, there’s Archie, the 8 year-old cat who thinks he’s one of the dogs. While Archie is an indoor kitty at heart, he loves the occasional adventure in the yard and brought his rockstar attitude to the session—at least for a few quick snaps before breaking up the band to go solo (under the bed).
Jensyn’s home is a perfect mix of elegance and warmth, which provided a stunning contrast to the playful 90s vibe she envisioned for the session. With everyone dressed in matching denim, we created a portrait that felt straight out of a nostalgic family album. Archie, ever the diva, posed just long enough to steal the spotlight before deciding he had other plans. Nellie and Poppie, on the other hand, were more than happy to soak up the attention and treats, making every frame filled with personality and joy.
Feeling like we needed a change of pace, we headed outside for some action shots. I always make it a point to incorporate play breaks into every photo session—it not only gives dogs an outlet to unwind from all the "sit" and "stay" requests but also provides a vital chance to capture them doing what they love most. For Nellie and Poppie, that meant fetch and tug were in full swing, and it was a joy to document their playful spirits and boundless energy.
Wanting to incorporate some of the natural beauty of Coeur d’Alene, we made our way to Fernan Lake. Though our time there was brief due to incoming heavy clouds and the sounds of nearby duck hunters, the stunning scenery added a breathtaking element to the session and provided a wonderful way to close out the day.
This session with Jensyn and her trio was a perfect example of how home-based photo sessions can be a fantastic option, especially during the colder months. Not all pets are comfortable outdoors, and being in their own environment allows their personalities to shine. Whether it’s a cozy Christmas portrait by the tree or a playful session in the yard, home sessions provide a relaxed and familiar setting for both pets and their humans.
