Corbin Park in Post Falls, Idaho, sits just a few minutes off I-90 just this side of the Idaho & Washington border. This wonderful little oasis of a park nestles right along the banks of the Spokane River with a good bit of shoreline to enjoy as well. With parking running the length of the park it's a wonderfully accessible location for pets who may not be comfortable walking too far.
Summary:
Pros:
- Varied terrain makes for some really beautiful photo ops.
- Close parking & flat areas make this a great spot for pets or their people who have mobility concerns.
- Easy access from the highway & large parking areas make getting there a breeze.
- View of the river & photographs like you're much more remote than you are.
Cons:
- It's largely a disc golf course, so finding space where you wont be in the way or get hit by a disc can be tricky.
- Very busy on the weekends.
- Not a good location for highly distracted dogs due to limited trails and high activity.
The leafy umbrella of the forest canopy does a fantastic job of diffusing the afternoon sun for the just right amount of warm shimmering light for an almost magical excursion.
When searching for a fantastic photo session location, there are so many factors that come into play. I've learned over the years that some spots are absolutely perfect for an afternoon picnic and make about the worst photo location possible. So I was elated when I stumbled on Corbin Park in Post Falls, Idaho right out of the gate.
Freki joined the family when he was just 8 weeks old. He came via rescue transport, having been born in a high-kill shelter in Texas. Life didn't start off easy for this loveable mug. And while it took a lot of coaxing to talk my husband into adding another dog to our family, he eventually relented. Though as we all know, dogs always choose their people. And while I know Freki sees me as Mom, he is very much, 100%, absolutely my husbands boy.
It's not easy being the husband of a photographer. No new adventure goes by without dozens of photo ops. And no place can be visited without the question posed "would this be a good photo location?" But I was a photographer when he met me so he knew what he was getting into, sorta. So when I came across Corbin Park and squealed with elation, "Oh my gosh! I just realized we've NEVER done an actual photo shoot with just you & Freki!" My husband graciously agreed, and secretly was as excited as I was.
Freki took a little more coaxing! With so many VERY new and interesting things to discover at Corbin Park, he had very little interest in sitting for photos. And there were a couple of times when they both almost ended up in the river!
Convincing a puppy-brained, slightly reactive, two year old Shepsky to pay attention in the middle of a crowded park with so many much more interesting things going around was no easy feat. But with constant patience, love and playful affection from his Dad, Freki was able to produce some beautiful artwork.
Which brings me to a very important point. Corbin Park is an absolutely beautiful and easy to access location. BUT, it is also largely a disc golf course. And quiet the popular one at that! So we did try to stick to the outskirts and stay out of the way of the players. Though a few errant discs landed close enough to get Freki and Robbie's attention!
Of course this is also one of the reasons I love to photograph action for young dogs. It gives them a chance to burn off the crazies! A half a dozen enthusiastic leaps over this giant log and Freki started to slow down, just a little bit.
