When Cathy first reached out to me about family photos to celebrate the first birthday of her two handsome pups Truman & Gus! Cathy was really looking forward to some beautiful Fall scenery and I knew just the spot. None other than my favorite location, Lions Park in Golden. Between the giant cottonwoods and the babbling Clear Creek, this location is perfect almost any time of the year. And in the Fall it somehow becomes magical.
Coordinating schedules with the entire family, including her off-to-college human children left little wiggle room for rescheduling. So when our long planned day brought with it another Colorado heatwave I almost panicked. Wanting to keep the family coordinated in Fall apparel while the temperature soared up to 90 took some creativity and strategy. But laying in the cool grass, under the parks massive shade trees made the whole experience surprisingly comfortable. And being Colorado natives, everyone knew to dress in layers!
Truman & Gus had a great time running around the park, chasing balls and each-other.
Not to mention the bubbles Cathy brought which caught the golden afternoon sun streaming through the trees and turned our lovely park into a magical place.
While the shade of the trees was wonderful, you really can't beat a little time at the creek! I've been known to do whatever it takes to get the shot, but this might have been the first time I've been in the water and the chill of the mountain snow-melt was a welcome relief!
A member of the family was even kind enough to grab this fantastic behind the scenes shot and Gil, Cathy and I worked to create some fantastic mid-creek images of the handsome boys!
One more family photo and it was time for a special surprise! While part of the reason for scheduling the session was to achieve some overdue family photos, we were also there to celebrate the 1st birthday of Gus & Truman! Having brought the brothers home just a couple weeks apart, Cathy raised two wild puppies at once. Having my own handful of a pup, I shudder at the idea of doubling the puppy chaos! But Cathy couldn't resist those big brown eyes and figured they'd also be great playmates as they grew up together.
So what's a doggy birthday party without a cake smash?!?! The pawesome cake came courtesy of Cosmo's Doggy Bakery (where I get all my puppy cakes). As tasty as it was beautiful the cake lasted just long enough to capture some adorably messy pictures.
These two adorably ornery pups keep Cathy & Del on their toes but you just have to love those big sweet eyes! Happy Birthday Boys!
