It was a beautiful Spring afternoon when I met up with Kelly, Ozzy and Louie at one of my absolute favorite spots. When Kelly and I first started planning her session she knew her sweet muppet-like pups would be very friendly, but was a little worried that their exponential energy would make them hard to photograph. "Not to worry" I promised. But having a wild-child 18-month-old pup of my own, I knew she wasn't totally comforted by my promise. My very first moments meeting Ozzy and Louie gave me an immediate insight into their very different personalities.
Louie's greeting came in boisterous bounds of enthusiasm. It was as if I was the long lost friend he hadn't seen in ages! He just couldn't wait to catch up. Kelly jokes that the slightly younger Louie "is just what you think about with a “second child” haha! He is my bull in a china shop. I joke that they couldn’t be more opposite. If they actually were kids, Ozzy would call me “mom” and Louie would call me “Kelly”. He is “that” kid. Haha! But I love them both of course!"
Both boys absolutely LOVE to play fetch. So we weren't long into our session when I suggested a play break to capture some action shots of the boys doing what they love most in the world. Ozzy is the absolute king of the Frisbee, he treated us to amazing sprints, huge leaps, and impressive catches. Perhaps it's just that he has a little extra practice, since he's a year older. Or maybe he's just naturally athletic. But I had a hard time even narrowing all his action shots down to a few of his best catches.
Louie...tried really really hard. But frequently found the Frisbee not even in the same frame with his exuberant leaps. I'll chalk it up to the fun, awkward teenage phase that young dogs go through. Where his brain and his limbs don't quite coordinate. And in fact, after he missed the landing entirely, landed on his face, and stood up to look around for the invisible obstacle that tripped him up. We decided to take a break from fetch and go cool off in the shade by Clear Creek.
Louie has such a fearless personality that he has to be seat-belted on car rides so he doesn't jump out the window. He's also known to do whatever it takes to get everyone laughing. When Kelly's parents came to visit Louie made a quick introduction by dragging her unmentionables out of her suitcase and into the living room. I suppose that's one way to make an impression on your in-laws! He's also eaten a marker and some drywall, which already had a hole due to some home improvements. So really if you think about it he's just very helpful. Helping Kelly's mom unpack, helping with home renovations. I once had a dog who loved to help with gardening. She would select where she thought a plant should go and dig a nice large hole for me. And once after watching me prune the roses she chewed an entire rose bush down to a stub. We frequently disagreed on how much help I really needed in the garden. Though that rose bush did outshine the rest the following season, so who knows?
Ozzy is the sweet, quiet, reserved one. Which isn't what you'd expect from a dog named after everyone's favorite Black Sabbath lead singer. Though Ozzy isn't all snuggles and high jumps, he does have a playfully demanding side too. If he's in the mood for some lovin' and there's something in your hand that might prevent you from petting him, like a cell phone, he will happily smack it away from you. If you could just train him to smack chips and cake away he might have a great career as a personal dietician!
Louie on the other hand likes to be the life of the party and always keeps his momma laughing. Sometimes by being silly and sometimes just by sitting on things, stairs, chairs, Ozzy...
No matter how different they are these darling boys have one thing in common. They bring absolute joy and love to light up Kelly's life!
