In the world of nonprofit organizations, the power of partnerships can be truly remarkable. This is the story of how a simple idea, combined with dedication, transformed into a fundraising project that featured local animals and raised awareness for nonprofits in Kootenai County, North Idaho, and Spokane.
The Tails Foundation had a vision to create a fundraising calendar that featured local animals while supporting other nonprofits. LaRain at Tails did all the hard work of lining up sponsors, coordinating the logistics, and reaching out to other local nonprofits in Kootenai County and Spokane. Her dedication to the cause and her unwavering support for animals in need were truly inspiring. While she managed the administrative and organizational aspects, I got to have all the fun of photographing animals great and small. It was a perfect partnership that combined our skills and passions to create something beautiful.
As the calendar took shape and we unveiled the stunning photos and the stories behind them, it was evident that the project was more than just a fundraiser. It was a source of inspiration and hope for those involved and for the communities it served. Each month brought new stories of resilience, compassion, and the incredible bond between animals and humans.
January: Lorna's Lovelies- A Cat Rescue
Meet Blue, our January star! This 10-month-old kitten is ready to brighten your new year with his playful spirit and irresistible charm. Get your calendar now and start 2024 with this adorable feline friend by your side! Blue is here to represent all the hard work of Lorna's Lovelies "a cat rescue." Blue's foster mom was kind enough to welcome me into her home and patient enough to watch me crawl along on the floor without laughing (too much) in pursuit of Blue's perfect picture.
February: Purrs4Life
Get ready for a feline frenzy this February! Our calendar star is one of the beautiful sanctuary cats from Purrs4Life.
Purrs4Life: A Post Falls, Idaho based nonprofit organization with a mission to change perceptions about cats. They educate people of all ages that cats are not disposable commodities; they are lifelong commitments and part of the family. Their goal is to promote compassion for these majestic animals and make a positive impact.
Through spay/neuter & trap/neuter/release programs they work to humanely reduce the number of unwanted cats in the area while educating the public about the value of love and companionship brought by feline friends.
Purrs4Life recognizes that millions of cats and kittens suffer due to human neglect, abandonment, and abuse each year. They aim to change this narrative and believe that when families experience the unconditional love and growing compassion that comes from loving a cat, they, in turn, learn to show love and compassion to each other.

March: Help Every Little Paw
On a chilly late Fall afternoon, the sun peeked out of the heavily clouded skies just in time to meet up with Mack & Josie for his modelling debut. Mack may be a foster fail due to that irresistibly adorable mug, but he's also a true success story and an icon of what they do at Help Every Little Paw ! You see Mack's had a rough couple of years. Adopted and then re-surrendered when his family didn't have the resources to address his extreme allergy-related skin condition. In fact, when he came into the care of Help Every Little Paw, he was almost completely bald and his whole body was covered in irritated scaley scabs. I can only imagine how uncomfortable he might have been. Josie, knowing that he would have a long road to recovery talked her father into fostering him. Mack's gentle and sweet nature and adorable face won the day, and it wasn't long before he because a foster fail and a permanent member of the family. Mack will be premiering as Mr. March!

June: North Idaho Blessings From Above Horse Rescue & Sanctuary
June shines the spotlight on North Idaho Blessings From Above horse rescue & sanctuary in our calendar. Few know that I grew up with horses, riding and training them throughout my life until circumstances led my horses to retire in Northern Arizona as I moved to Denver, Colorado. Having to say goodbye to them left a gaping hole in my heart, and I was uncertain about how I'd feel being around horses again, especially when they weren't mine.
When I met Kim and two of her resident rescues, I hid behind my camera, focused on the task at hand; creating beautiful images. However, as our photosession wrapped up & the sun went down, Kim led me through the pasture to meet the rest of the herd. From within the warmth of the barn, an adorable grey face poked out - Sweet Pony Boy, completely blind, came to investigate and say hello. In that moment, I felt like that same 6-year-old girl, touching that velvety muzzle, and suddenly, I was home. Almost a decade of sadness melted away. I am so grateful to have had the opportunity and I’m counting the days until I can visit with Kim & her horses again.
July: Sammy's Clubhouse Ferret Rescue
Gracing our July feature is this cutie pie from Sammy's Clubhouse Spokane Ferret Rescue and Education. Ferrets can be fantastic pets, but people often get them without doing their research. Sammy's works hard to educate any potential adopters so that they might provide a lifetime of joy & care.
This little guy & his friends were just waaaay too much fun to photograph. They treated me to some adorable dance moves, tested my camera's high speed focusing ability and kept me on my toes as they weaved in and out of the garden plants.
August: 2nd Chance Ranch
August's photo session was a true trip down memory lane, making me feel like a kid again! I had the pleasure of capturing the amazing farm animals of 2nd Chance Ranch & Mobile Petting Zoo while they were on duty. The sheer joy and excitement these animals brought to the children highlighted the profound importance of their work. It's not just about rescuing animals but also about teaching the next generation to care for and appreciate these wonderful creatures.
2nd Chance Ranch is first and foremost a rescue facility dedicated to rehabilitating abused, neglected, and unwanted animals, nursing them back to health. Their mobile petting zoo serves to not only support the rescue but also to educate and empower the next generation of animal lovers.

November: Higher Ground Animal Sanctuary
"When it was time to include Higher Grounds Animal Sanctuary in our project, I was fortunate to have just attended their Barktoberfest event. Wanda the Alpaca, curious about our photobooth, graciously volunteered to be photographed, with the condition that we capture her good side.
Inland Northwest Animal Sanctuary, DBA Higher Ground Animal Sanctuary is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit animal rescue and sanctuary nestled on the lower east loop of Green Bluff. December: Reptile Domicile
Wrapping up the year with some cold-blooded cuties from Reptile Domicile, we're featuring a rescued box turtle who arrived with a shell looking a bit like a chew toy, but is now well on the road to recovery.
