Fun Fall Facts to amuse your friends and entertain small children:
Did you wake up on Friday morning like me and suddenly realize FALL has arrived? At least temporarily. This is Colorado after all. So it's more like a sneak peek at the coming cooler weather. After weeks at 90° the dogs and I were so ready for a little breather.
* Fun Fact: Fall is also my absolute favorite time to photograph! The air is crisp but not cold yet. So dogs and people feel more energetic. The leaves are lighting up with reds & golds making our gorgeous Colorado landscape even more epic. And best of all you can snuggle without feeling suffocated!
Fall is an American thing. This time of year was originally just referred to as "Harvest Time" and eventually Autumn. But when early American poets started referring to the "the falling of the leaves" the term Fall caught on. At least until the revolution. After which the rest of the Europe went back to Autumn. but American's, either due to an independent spirit or maybe just a propensity for shortening things kept Fall as a primary term for the third season.
The official first day of Fall this year is September 22. But do you know why? The first day of Fall lands squarely on the Autumnal Equinox, for those of us in the Northern hemisphere. What that means is that the planets axes is pretty much perpendicular to the Sun. So all latitudes get roughly an equal amount of daylight and darkness. Essentially right between the Summer and Winter Solstices which are the longest and shortest daylight hours of the year. The equinox doesn't always land on the 22nd, but it's generally a very tight window varying by only a day or two over 1000 years.
According to Redbook, Fall is also the time of year when most people fall in love. Maybe it's because there are more outdoor activities, like hayrides and harvest festivals for people to gather. Or new starts like when people return to college and sports and find a whole new group of interests. Or maybe it's because the cooler weather leads to more snuggling around the campfire.
I think our canine friends love Fall as much as we do. When I asked my boys, Floki & Freki what they like about this time of year this is what they said:
- Cooler weather = longer walks & no more hot paws on asphalt.
- Lots of leaf piles to jump in!
- You don't have to let your tongue hang down to your knees just to go for a little jaunt.
he color of a trees leaves is caused by the amount of sugar stored in them? This is why Maple trees are so red.
Also,
If you're fond of moon-gazing, this season is for you! You can see the brightest full moon of the year around the Fall equinox. Traditionally known as the harvest moon. Its extra bright light helped tremendously before flood lights were invented as farmers worked tirelessly day & night to bring in the harvest.
This is also the time of year where my sessions book up the fastest. In fact, I'm already booked until the last weekend of September. So if you've been dreaming of a Fall photo shoot. Don't hesitate or you'll miss out on all the Autumny goodness.
